Don’t try to change everything—target only the leverage points that really work.
If you set aside idealistic thinking for a moment, rather than trying to change everything, the most effective approach is to (1) understand the flow of money and institutions that are already moving, and (2) make small interventions at those “joints.” For example, in an election, rather than trying to move all independents, you should thoroughly pursue the needs of the 3–5% swing voters who decide the outcome; in policy, focus on rewriting the content of fields that already have allocated budgets. This kind of “pinpoint leverage” mindset is, in the current world, the most realistically effective.
