The difference between clarity and shallowness is the amount of thinking before you trim.

In one line, I think the difference isn't "how much you trimmed" but "how much you thought about it before trimming". People who properly understand the background and assumptions, and present only the main points in a coherent argument, appear clear and deep; those who keep their understanding shallow and just cut out the catchy parts to state a conclusion inevitably look shallow.
